Back Panels
The backs are solid wood panels, joined up from three boards each:![]() | |
After cleaning up glue squeeze-out and hand-planing the panels flat, the tops were cut to form the gable, and the carving pattern was traced using graphite paper, then re-traced by hand with a pencil to darken the lines:![]() | |
Now a handheld router is used to lower the ground before carving:![]() | |
Eric then began carving.

Here the rose at the top of the gable, and the laurel wreath and crown in the center, have been carved:![]() | |
Here are the two panels in progress. The one on the left has all the fields lowered and is ready for carving to begin. On the right, carving is completed on the upper portion, including the medallions, but the large panels have not yet been set-in.![]() | |
